Wind turbine blade epoxy resin is an infusion-grade epoxy system built for long fatigue life and full fibre wet-out. Yolatech supplies it as two matched parts: a low-viscosity bisphenol F resin for fast wet-out, and a bisphenol A resin for joint stiffness. Both parts cure with polyetheramine D-230.
Blade shells are made by vacuum infusion. The resin has to travel several metres through stacked glass or carbon fabric before it gels, and it has to do that without leaving dry patches.
YLE-127, a standard bisphenol A liquid resin, sits at 8,000–11,000 mPa·s at 25 °C. That is fine for hand lay-up. In infusion it moves slowly, and slow movement is what creates voids and resin-rich zones.
Bisphenol F changes the maths. YLE-170 runs at 3,500–4,500 mPa·s — less than half the bisphenol A figure above — with an epoxy equivalent weight of 165–175 g/eq. Faster flow, better wet-out, fewer defects.
| Grade | Type | EEW (g/eq) | Viscosity @25 °C (mPa·s) |
|---|---|---|---|
| YLE-170 | Bisphenol F | 165–175 | 3,500–4,500 |
| YLE-121 | Bisphenol A | 170–176 | 3,500–5,500 |
| YLE-127 | Bisphenol A | 176–184 | 8,000–11,000 |
Most blade shops blend rather than pick one. A common split is 60–70 % bisphenol F for the infusion path and 30–40 % bisphenol A where the laminate needs higher stiffness. Blending also lets you tune gel time without changing hardener.
D-230 is a difunctional primary amine with an amine value of at least 7.5 mmol/g and primary amine content above 96 %. Its low viscosity and low vapour pressure keep the mixed system workable for long infusion windows.
For a 100 g resin blend at EEW 170 g/eq, the stoichiometric D-230 requirement works out near 35 phr, using an amine hydrogen equivalent weight of 60 g/eq. Most laminators run 5–10 % below stoichiometric to keep toughness up — exact figures should be confirmed against our TDS.
Beyond blades, the same combination is used in wind turbine nacelle covers, pultruded spar caps, and large FRP moulds. Anywhere you need long flow distance plus fatigue resistance, this wind turbine blade epoxy resin pairing is the lower-risk starting point.
